    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My placement was a great experience to gain insight into the power industry. I worked at Ratcliffe-on-soar coal fired power station, to use my university knowledge and see it in use on a live plant. Eon were very helpful when settling into the working environment, with plenty of jobs to do.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The guys in my team were all very experienced, with most of them being on plant for over 10 years. They were willing to share their experience and knowledge to help me learn as much as I can. I thought they would make me the tea boy, but they tried to get me involve as much as possible.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • In effect I had two managers the manager of the team I was placed in, and the other manager of my placement. I had a lot more interaction and guidance from my placement manager, than my team manager. However at times I felt like they were too busy sometimes so sit down and help me with tasks.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • With a power plant the work varied day by day, week by week, so it is hard to say 90 percent of the time I was busy doing some jobs for different engineers. The amount of work placed on the engineers is a lot, so I became a good relief to burden some of the workload if it became too much.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I didn't have the experience to run things on my own, and from a safety point of view I can see why they didn't want to. But I do wish they would have given me a couple of independent jobs that I could have completed on my own. If I was in a smaller team I guess more responsibility would have been given to me.

    2/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I gained a lot of training during my time on placement from first aid to energy markets and more in between. The usual safety training was given straight away so I was able to get around plant. However to gain any extra training was difficult, whether it was to get driving training etc, people weren't bothered to get training set up.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I was placed in the boiler team on the power plant, which is a team of about 12 people. It was a great atmosphere most of the time but at stressful times people became very focused which is to be expected. Everyone got on and had good banter which helped a lot when interacting with contractors.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Once on placement organisation was good when it came to jobs and moving around teams. However the lead up to placement was very poor, I found out I had gained my placement in March time and didn鈥檛 hear from my placement manager until the end of June, as I started the first week in July. Also the head of Eon鈥檚 placement scheme didn鈥檛 have any interaction with us once I was on placement.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • 3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • After my placement I am able to gain a fast track place on the Graduate scheme with Eon, and with Eon being a european wide company there are many opportunities. Whether it is in research into new technologies, renewable energy or conventional energy; Eon has a vast portfolio, and once in the company movement is possible to new industries.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • On the power plant there were 13 undergraduate placements and 4 graduate placements. It was a great group to be a part of, becasue of some were engineers, business and accounting 西瓜视频s and IT support. So coming from different parts of the plant and seeing what each other do, was a good environment.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived in Nottingham which is a good 西瓜视频 town with 2 universities in the city, so weekends and evenings could be spent in the city socialising with the other undergrads. The cost of living was ok, the salary from my placement wasn't great but better than 西瓜视频 loan so gave me abit more freedom but not much more.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nottingham is a good city for a night out

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not many some sports teams but with a wide range of people there should be more opportunities.
