    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Working at E.ON Ratcliffe power station was a great experience, I learnt both technical and professional skills. Everyone very friendly and happy to help you, giving me many opportunities to work in different sectors of the station, from engineering problems to working on procurement procedures, and even giving tours of the site to visitors.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by colleagues. Not only would they be happy to help me with any questions i had and explain things in great detail, but they would also approach me with work they felt would benefit me and the company. I was invited to social events outside of working hours and felt very much part of the community.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Throughout my placement i was given support and guidance. At the start of my placement i sat down with my line manager and discussed targets for my year. Whenever i had any questions everyone was happy to help, either educating me themselves or pointing me in the right direction to learn myself.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Work load at the power station can vary drastically from week to week. At the beginning of my placement i was able to spend a lot of time learning about the station whilst completing a small amount of jobs, but as i progressed through the year i gained more long term projects, making me busy every day without over stressing me.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • After a few months working at ratcliffe my team got to know my abilities better and i started to get a real sense of responsibility. I was asked to do the research and provide a suggestion for projects vital to the power plants operation. I occasionally was also asked to represent my team at inter-station engineering meetings.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • E.ON were very supportive of any training i wished to attend, holding several good courses on site themselves, but also funding external courses. I got the opportunity to use technical knowledge i had learnt during my studies on real life projects on the power station, which also helped to develop my knowledge further.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was great. The whole team got along very well and the work to break balance was perfect. When needed the whole team could operate efficiently together in a professional manner, but the team also frequently enjoyed discussions together. An exciting and laid back environment, that was serious when it needed to be.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Ratcliffe have several years experience with undergraduate and graduate placements. During my first few weeks the placement 西瓜视频 from the year before was still working, which allowed for a great transition period, as i had a personal mentor for the first 3 weeks. Undergraduates are encouraged to see as much of the plant as possible and every opportunity was made available to us.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was amazed when the company agreed without any doubts that i could attend an expensive course in London. They paid for the course, travel and even allowed me to have a day off work. Each team had a generous budget for "undergraduate development". Booking on site courses was very easy and encouraged.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • All undergraduates were introduced to each other and always sat together at lunches. We also organised social events as a group, everyone got along very well.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Lived in nottingham, very standard prices, not amazingly cheap and not super expensive. I shared a house with 4 other undergraduates working for ratcliffe and our rent was 拢75 per week, which is very reasonable. Several good supermarkets nearby for shopping, and nights out had prices that i was used to in any other city i have been.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife in nottingham was good, there were always events on. Standard club nights out and very frequent live music, also lots of great restaurants. Lots of 西瓜视频s in the area i lived and also in nottingham center. Work organised nights out too which were always good fun, often had free bars and even paid meals for special events.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were team and station wide events. Meals with teams and events such as bowling were common occurrences. Whole station celebration of 10 million hours worked without a loss of time injury saw a free bar night out in nottingham which a large portion of the station attended, good night out with colleagues.
