    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was an enjoyable experience for me. I was trusted with genuine work and doing beneficial projects; I was well integrated into the team; I had a good work-life balance; there was a good community of other undergrads; I picked up genuinely useful skills. The placement was a success for me.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • When I started i was told i wouldn't just be doing a standard placement project which I've heard that others did, my line manager told me i'd be doing genuine, contributory work and that's what happened. I was, to some extent, given more autonomy than permanent team members and my input was never dismissed.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The managers that i had were both keen to arrange meetings to catch up with me and check up on how i was doing with my placement, and they were more than happy to give me the benefit of the knowledge either on the industry or technical in-job advice on certain projects i was working on at the time. My only criticism is that perhaps they didn't look to formally develop me along in-house competencies which would have been useful for the grad-scheme application - however this may also have been a failing on my side.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was never over-worked in my placement. People were generally conscious that as a placement 西瓜视频, having time to get used to the work and get up to speed with projects was crucial, so as a result i was never overloaded. That said, it was rare after the first couple of months that i felt i had nothing to get on with, or i couldn't ask for some extra work to be thrown my way.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given daily and monthly reporting duties that were essential to my team's work, and i was entrusted from the 3rd-4th month of my placement to gather data and then aggregate an invoice which was worth tens of millions of pounds every month. Quite often the projects i worked on involved creating new processes or streamlining existing processes that are used every day. However there were certain tasks which were still above my pay-grade and certain things i did that required retrospective checks.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have continued to develop skills in IT, analysis, problem solving and communication which will no doubt benefit me in my final year. Prior to this experience I had no real in work experience outside of part-time retail and service work, so as far as in work skills go, this placement has taught me an awful lot, and has put me at ease at the prospect on moving on with my career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • In my team personally it was quite friendly and people were always chatting and joking through work, however the rest of the office could be quite quiet and serious at times. People were generally prepared to help you even if they weren't people you were familiar with, but often much of the social aspect in the office itself occurred within your own team - or at least until lunchtimes.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Once i was in my job it was structured quite well; for example my line manager gave me appropriate work for my level of experience and proficiency with programs like Excel throughout my placement, generally ramping up the complexity or significance of the work the more confident he was in my abilities. The company itself was a bit slack in terms of communication at times, particularly before i started, and did not have too much of a guiding input into how i was progressing. I think if my manager had been less on the ball it would've been more of an issue than it was.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was given opportunities to go on several trips to generating stations and conferences/workshops. E.ON has a lot of in-house development and the company as a whole focuses on employee development quite strongly. There is a certain expectation of managers from the company that they will fund training and development courses - so then it is just a case of how you as an individual pursue your own development.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • If you do a placement with E.ON they then fast-track you on to a graduate scheme interview at the end of the placement, and by that time you should be aware if you're prepared to work for the company or not. I personally would like to follow through with this interview and i am interested in the prospect of working for E.ON in the future - it offers good development and qualifications and lots of opportunities to move around the company and gain experience from other departments.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • It was relatively strong between myself and the other undergrads, we usually ate lunch together and some even lived together. These things are often reflective of what you put in and we were all keen to make the effort not just with the undergrads on our own site, but elsewhere in the company. Away from the other placement 西瓜视频s, there were also casual football matches played weekly by colleagues throughout E.ON which was good to get to know people from a wide variety of departments and seniority.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Pretty cheap in the Midlands.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
