    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. I was trusted with a variety of tasks, given a project to implement and achieve during my placement, and became involved in various projects. I found that employees had little time to help after the settling in period, but were prepared to collaborate on work. This helped them reduce their workload, while allowing me to learn from different roles throughout my time.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Introducing myself as an intern, I felt that many colleagues (particularly outwith my own department) had little to no time to discuss things, and would ignore emails and put off meetings until the next week, then never commit. When introducing myself as an engineer (and not mentioning I was on placement), I found it much easier to get time with people and keep their interest. My immediate colleagues were trusting, and valued me by trusting me with lots of responsibility.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • As there was no appointed manager in my department, I reported directly to the head of my division, who was usually away at different sites throughout the UK. I usually managed a face to face catch up once a week for around half an hour. Because of this, I tried to ensure that I prepared well for my meeting to ensure I would be given enough work for the week. The support and guidance was fantastic when it was possible to get it.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My business varied from day to day. I attended lots of site visits in the beginning to try and understand the technology and find problems which I had been contracted to try and avoid in future sites. Aside from this, I spent my time mainly in the office writing documents or searching for further information. I was usually busy, but often found time when I had little to do when my reports were out for approval & review.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a large amount of responsibility throughout my placement. As a member of a newly formed team, I acted as an engineer for a number of projects, advising on processes to be completed, developing plans and schedules to be followed by E.ON and other subcontractors, and various other project planning tasks.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My project management and project planning skills have been hugely improved, and I hope that this will aid me when scheduling and managing group projects at university. My technical knowledge of systems has also improved hugely as I have been able to see the theory we are taught in an industrial situation. I hope that on return to university, my understanding of the theory will be much clearer.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was a relaxed atmosphere, but most people kept to themselves and it was quiet aside from business discussions.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organisation of the internship was mixed. The manager had ensured I had received the contents of the starter pack (laptop, work phone, email & computer login) but some parts had been missed. This resulted in delays in getting started, which I had to look myself to try and get sorted (keycard for the office, CSCS card, portal token to allow me access to payslips & holidays etc). However, this was relatively easy to solve.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company were extremely keen to invest in training me in order to help me reach the graduate scheme. I attended technical courses on the company's technology to improve my knowledge, as well as being able to visit other sites in the business to get an insight into the activities and work completed by other sectors. I was also instructed to keep records of my development to help me in future development plans.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    National Travel

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The graduate scheme is very appealing in terms of future development. E.ON actively look to ensure you will meet all of the correct criteria to go and achieve chartered status, The scheme will also allow you to travel internationally and work abroad (most likely Germany) for 6 months during the scheme. You have the ability to be fast tracked to the graduate scheme if you perform well during your placement.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • The work environment was fairly social. There were occasional nights out, dinners and team away days which were fun and allowed team building to occur. In terms of 西瓜视频s, as there were only a small number of us based in London (the rest being in Nottingham & Coventry), there were few specific 西瓜视频 activities which we were involved in.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As my placement was situated in the centre of London, costs were primarily high. As I lived in Camden (approximately 30 minutes journey to work), my rent was 拢640 per month for a room in a 5 person 西瓜视频 flat. This suited me fine for the summer, but I'm not sure if I would be able to justify it for a long term job. Socialising was expensive, but as a 西瓜视频, there are always places you can find for cheap.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • In Camden (where I lived), the nightlife was amazing, with numerous pubs & clubs open all of the time and loads of restaurants. These are never cheap (being in London), but were not ridiculously expensive and more than affordable on a London wage. At work, places were more expensive - I never had a full night out in the city of London, presumably because it was unaffordable!

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Very few.
