The Role
I found the work placement fantastic. The Engineering Governance team that looked after me and particularly This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions were very welcoming. I have learned so much not only about the energy industry but also working in a large organisation. I have had the opportunity to see many different areas of the business and although my time here has been short (8 weeks) I feel like I was given the tools to make the most of it.
I think that it took a bit of time to settle in and demonstrate my value to the team. Once I was able to demonstrate that I could provide value to the team, they started to value me. By the end of my internship, I felt like an integral part of the team and that I was genuinely helping out, not just a burden.
This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions has been an outstanding mentor. He has really taken me under his wing and given me guidance not just on the specifics of working at E.ON but helped me immensely regarding my career path. The rest of the engineering governance team have been really gracious in answering all of my questions, and going out of their way to give me development opportunities and guidance.
From the start I had a meeting with my mentor to discuss what I wanted to get out of the internship. This meant that I was always working towards something that both helped the company and allowed me to develop. Whenever I felt I did not have anything to do I felt welcome to ask the team for a project.
Given that my placement was only 8 weeks, I felt that I was given the appropriate amount of responsibility given my competence level. I feel that with more time here I would have taken on even larger projects. The longer I was part of the team the more free reign and trust I was given to develop the work I was doing.
The skills that I have developed will be invaluable for my dissertation as my dissertation topic aligns very closely with the work I have been doing here. Likewise, the time management and project management skills I have developed here will help with my further studies and work life. Finally, I have developed my presentation and people management skills.
The Company
Within my area, I feel like there is a good balance of work and conversation. In my first week or so there was an adjustment period. After I settled in, I felt very welcome in my team area. I felt that if team work was necessary there were rooms that could be booked that were effective and likewise if I wanted to get on with my work I could just put my headphones in.
My internship was extremely organised. I had everything prepared for me before I arrived, my laptop phone and logins were all prepared for me. This is thanks to the Engineering Governance team. Other interns in E.ON did not have this luxury and did not have their emails set up for nearly a month.
I feel there was no holding back to my training even though I was here for 8 weeks. The team were very gracious in understanding that I was here to learn. I did not feel that any doors were closed because I was only here for a sort period of time.
Working from home
Although I very much enjoyed my time here at E.ON and have learnt huge amounts. I do not feel that this is a role that I can see myself continuing. I think that I will prefer a less technical role and getting more involved in a more business strategy type role.
The Culture
There was a good social scene amongst some of the other interns that were working in my office or others near me. I went home quite frequently over the weekends and was only here for a couple weekends so did not get too involved in activities. Interns in other offices were too far away to socialise with.
The cost of living was fine where I was working. It is cheaper than where I live down south. My wages fully covered my rent and expenses however there was not much left at the end of the month. As I did not do a massive amount of socialising in the area, I am not sure about prices.
As I lived close to Nottingham the nightlife was really good, I only went out once but as a university city, there were lots of things to do. Where I was living was only a short tram ride into the city centre which was not that expensive. There are lots of bars and nightclubs in Nottingham. Hucknall the area I was living had no nightlife.
This was more down to me than down to the company. There were not loads of opportunities, but mainly because I did not make much of an effort. I did join the gym, I feel like I would have invested more time in activities like this if I was in Nottingham for longer.
