The Role
Costain are very welcoming and considerate towards newcomers. I was not only able to learn a lot about the industry of engineering but also about the ethics and values of Costain itself. I was impressed with how well the company's values aligned with mine and how many platforms and opportunities they have for personal development. I would recommend Costain because during this placement I have not only grown professionally but I have grown as a person as well.
All the work that I was given within the teams I worked with was actually used and at times extremely important. This made me feel very valued as my teams trusted me with tasks such as chairing meetings to gain important information form the client and proof reading documents that were due for submission. Despite this I was not thrown in at the deep end because my teams were there to support me and answer any questions I had along the way. Even when I made mistakes they were very encouraging.
My team managers and line manager always made sure that they could make time to answer my questions. They also took time to explain the projects I was working on and the work that I would be doing. My line manager also explained important things such as how I would be getting paid, how to book leave and so on. I always felt that I could ask questions when I needed to and when they weren't available then my colleagues were more than happy to answer my questions. Overall I had a very good support system.
Although there were times I had a fair amount of work to complete, I never felt overwhelmed and was always given a reasonable amount of time to complete it. However, mostly, I felt that the balance was very good.
I was treated like a permanent member of staff so I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility such as chairing some meetings (later on when I new more about the project and the work I was doing) and collecting important information. Despite this, I was still given support and my team were very patient with me as I was finding my feet. Later on the responsibilities I was given didn't feel so daunting as I got use to being a participating member of a professional team.
I feel like this placement has given me perspective and context to apply the things I am learning and have learnt in university. I feel that this will be very beneficial for my future studies as I know will know why and exactly how the things I learn as theory can be applied in a practical sense within the industry I want to go into after university.
The Company
During my placement I had the opportunity to experience two different kinds of environments. I was mainly based in an office that had a corporate kind of feel, however at times I was working in a depot. In the office I was surrounded by very lively team members however we were still reserved and respectful when people were working quietly around us. There was more energy in the depot as everyone was lively and bantering. I loved being in both environments as it gave me a good balance and also taught me how to present myself in two very different professional environments.
The time between my interview and the day I started my placement was quite short so there were some growing pains but they were only small things like sorting out my induction and getting a pass to the building. Once this was sorted out everything else ran smoothly. I was always paid on time and regularly saw my line manager.
Whilst on my placement I learnt that Costain are all about the development of their employees. I had many opportunities to go on courses and to improve my skills. They even offer the opportunity for 西瓜视频s who have done a placement with them to be sponsored for the remainder of their studies which is amazing.

Future employment prospects within the company are very appealing because they are always looking to develop themselves as a company and stay within the forefront of innovation. Costain understand that in order to achieve this they need employees with fresh perspective that is why I believe they are so keen on investing in future employees (西瓜视频s).
The Culture
The social scene amongst colleagues was quite good. There were many company/project organised events and there were many times my colleagues and I went out for a drink after work. This was a really good experience because I got the chance to see and interact with more senior members of the projects in a more informal setting.
I commuted in every morning so I am not sure what the cost of living in London is. However, going out for lunch regularly can be quite expensive when it adds up but there are a few more cost friendly places to eat like McDonalds and KFC if you don't mind eating rubbish from now and then.
Central London at night is always lively, you will never run out of things to do and places to see. Most bars are reasonably priced but you do get the odd place that will charge crazy prices because of the location. With that in mind going for a night out in central London is more expensive when you compare it to other places in the country.
Costain have many clubs and organisations that people can get involved in from dealing with issues surrounding the LGBTQ+ to playing football there is something for everyone. Costain also encourage its employees to do a lot of charity work so there are always different things people can get involved in outside work.
