The Role
My placement as a whole was an okay experience with a few great highlights. These were opportunities to visit and learn about some of the company's main energy generation sites which I was able to organise through the great links and networking present at E.ON. However, the majority of the placement was not ideal. Having applied for an engineering role and instead working mainly on Excel projects, I feel my presence was not utilised. I understand that this is because of a company-wide decision to delay SMETS 2 Meter rollouts, therefore making my role not required. Despite all this, taking into account my visits, healthy work atmosphere and networking, I feel I have progressed during this year and am ready for full-time work.
My role was that of data breakdown and analysis and as part of my team, I strived to depict data in all ways possible. Doing this, I made suggestions to better the training and assessing of meter technicians in an effort to reduce errors on the field. This however was not something that was done before my arrival at the company and was only being done as a possibility for the upper management to discuss. Because my work was not integral to my team, I only felt moderately valued.
I had a good amount of support at the company. My manager was fair and always pointed my in the direction of someone who could help at any hurdles in my work. The company also had a placement officer who was responsible to assist the placement 西瓜视频s in their year. She gave advice when I complained of a low work load and also helped us organise "Community Days", where we gathered for a day of growth, learning new skills and about different areas of the company. Overall, I felt a very little lack of support.
On a daily basis I worked on on-going projects and helped with admin tasks which mostly consisted of scanning and backing-up documents and logging assessment data. No work was time sensitive and I only had long term deadlines where I was to present projects in presentations. Therefore I was moderately busy daily.
As I worked on my own projects, only discussing with my team when needing advice or information, I was essentially my own boss and with minimal supervision. I was also given the flexibility of managing my own breaks and work times, only having to ensure I met my minimum hours, goals and was present at all important meetings.
From having almost no knowledge of how to use Excel, to becoming very proficient, I have gained an appreciation of how powerful data management tool it is. With this new skill, coursework projects at university will be greatly streamlined. Now being used to work life and office dynamics, I am confident progressing to career post-university.
The Company
The general atmosphere of the office was very positive, everything was clean and organised, free beverages were available in the vending machines and people were great to be around. Often employees would start conversations in an effort to make me feel comfortable and welcome seeing that I was new to the company.
The work placement was overall very badly set-up. I applied to work for a role to help in the SMETS 2 rollout which was a new development for the company. However this could no longer take place as intended as the rollout was delayed to a month after my leave date. To make matters worse, I was not notified of this change before the placement. The delay was initially promised to not be as late as it was, and I expected to move onto SMETS 2 work a few months into my placement but this did not happen. From talking to other placement 西瓜视频s at E.ON, it was clear that my role was the only one who suffered this lack of organisation and this was then reaffirmed when finding out that all roles were open for 西瓜视频s in the following year except my own.
Although I was not able to be a part of the SMETS 2 rollout, my manager wanted me to still have learnt about what I could have been involved with. I was given the opportunity to partake in meter installation practices in the new training centre at Kingswinford, visit sites on field with technicians and engineers and sit in a coaching course for SMETS 2 trainers. As stated before, my manager supported any of my requests to visit other E.ON sites to learn more about energy production in the company.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
With all the links E.ON has in the energy market, in Europe and beyond, as well as its commitment to move its focus to renewables, E.ON is a company I would definitely return to in the future. My interests would like in its growing wind energy division and its research in electric vehicles.
The Culture
There was no social scene other than when meeting the other 西瓜视频s every other month.
It was very costly to live in Kingswinford and not much in the way of recreation. Therefore I stayed in Birmingham and commuted in, socialising with my university friends.
Non-existent. Location of work was a retirement spot for many senior citizens.
Very little opportunities outside work.
