    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My placement gave me a great overview of the energy sector and I was given the opportunity to undertake a number of really interesting projects, explore the wider organisation and attend sector events such as conferences and seminars. Overall, a fantastic experience to work for a global organisation to understand the industry challenges and meet so many knowledgable people.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team made me feel so welcome and really went out of their way to support me with all my projects. I felt I could ask any questions regarding project work, personal development or professional development. Furthermore, they took the time to mentor me and help me explore the business.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I could not have asked for more supportive management and team leaders; they were happy to take time to discuss my work and provide me time in monthly meetings to update the wider team with my work and gain important feedback. Also, they were extremely supportive in allowing me to take time off work and travel to visit external sites, E.ON events, sector conferences and lectures - as a result, I feel much more knowledgable about the company and the industry. Furthermore, I had the great opportunity to be mentored by a senior business leader within E.ON, which was an incredible insight into the routes to leadership and how to develop myself successfully.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was a lot of flexibility in this role, due to the large amount of travel. As a result, I could work flexi time and if neccesary work from home at periods. This allowed me to manage my work load effectively and ensure I was able to meet deadlines. Furthermore, I was given a sufficient amount of project work to keep me busy on a daily basis and support was always there if I needed it.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was suprised that the project initially provided was a really important project for the team with large annual savings. I led the initial analysis and supported the implementation of an engineering performance trial. It allowed me to work with a number of teams across the business, explore our power generation sites and meet a variety of interesting people. Also, when I was keen to develop my own idea, I was trusted to deliver and supported with every step.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I would say the investment from my team, management and my senior business leader mentor were absolutely skills for life - I feel much more confident about my 'softer' skills and how I wish to develop through the sector. It has been a brilliant experience and this is directly due to the time provided from my immidiate team. Also, I am certain that I would like to work in the energy sector, so this has been valuable experience.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I worked in the E.ON UK HQ (Westwood) in Coventry, which is a fairly large office in the middle of no where. A lot of people travel, so sometimes the office is quite empty. The area where my immidiate team has a chatty and fun atmosphere (when everyone is not travelling!), but the wider Westwood office can sometimes feel a bit dry and stale. It's not quite got the 'buzz' that other HQs have.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The initial organisation and introduction was all due to the great efforts by the previous Undergraduate performing the role and my team leader - they were both really supportive in providing an excellent introduction to my role at E.ON. Unfortunately, HR provided next to no support throughout the introduction and during the placement - I felt very much on my own at times and it was the little things they got wrong, such as not being able to introduce me to the other Undergraduates in the building. Any Undergraduate activities (such as development opportunties or sector visits) were organised by the Undergraduates and funded by their respective teams - HR did not involve themselves, but were very happy to support if approached. We are aware HR are reviewing the Undergraduate scheme, which at the moment is very 'ad hoc' compared to the structured Graduate scheme. I have no doubt this will be successful, as HR were excellent in listening to our feedback.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • If you wish to sit in the office for five days a week and do your 37 hours, E.ON will allow you to do that. However, E.ON really are BRILLIANT in allowing you to develop through personal and professional development opportunities - BUT, it really is down to the individual, you find your own opportunities! For example, we (the Undergraduates) organised a visit to our London offices to see our operations there as well as site visits around the country (including an offshore wind farm visit!); the respective Undergraduates' teams at E.ON were more than happy to allow the occasional day off and the finance to travel. This shows how E.ON understand the importantance of a well-rounded Undergraduate.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • E.ON provide the opportunity to 'fast track' to the Graduate scheme. However, it's not as simple as it seems. From what I've heard of friends at other companies (the big 4 for example) you are simply provided an interview and then you are offered a Graduate scheme place. The 'fast track' opportunity at E.ON is perhaps ironically named - you still have to complete an application form and attend an assesment centre and have your current line manager complete a rather large form. It's fantastic that E.ON offer the opportunity (they certainly don't have to), but it's not a quick and easy job. I would love to work for E.ON in the future, but I've not been overly-impressed by the comments from current Graduates, wider E.ON employees and the conversion rate from Undergraduate to Graduate is rather poor. In conclusion, I'm just left in limbo not sure what to thinkl - I want to work for E.ON, as it would provide a truly international understanding of the sector, but at the same time I'm remembering there are perhaps other opportunities.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • It was great to have a group of Undergraduates on placement at the same time as me - we had a few evenings out for meals/drinks, as well as meeting for lunch at work and organising visits together. I've made some great friends who I will certainly be keeping in contact with as we progress through the sector together.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived in Birmingham, which was fairly expensive for both accomodation and socialising. I've heard Coventry is quite cheap.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Some local bars and restaurants to visit, but you will need to know someone with a car! Not exactly London where you can fall out of the office and into a pub.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The opportunities were there if you were proactive in looking for them. I'm aware some of the other Undergraduates played for the E.ON Cricket and Football teams. Lots of social activities though with my immidiate team.
