Overview
The first day was a multi-divisional day, allowing us to network with all other spring interns, exploring various lines of business. Subsequent days allowed us to delve deeper into equity research and its inner workings from analysts themselves, building up to our own bluepaper research report presentations by the end of the week. We also participated in interactive teach-in sessions to learn about what the day to day for various people on the research desk looked like.
Skills
Not only did I feel I was able to develop my technical skills surrounding researching and relevant data analysis for presenting certain pitches and ideas, but I was also able to hone my soft skills - improving interpersonal relations with my peers as well as the panel of graduates/analysts whom I was able to interact with and ask questions to, first hand, to gain a better understanding of their role.
Business Insight
I found it eye-opening to see what different roles are available even under the equity research division which is already quite niche as it is. It was particularly enjoyable to be able to appreciate and hear from various different graduates/analysts who were each so passionate about their respective areas of expertise, highlighting how there is something for everyone.
Culture
The culture of the firm was warm and welcoming, creating a supportive environment that allowed us to feel comfortable enough to ask questions to gain deeper insights into any areas of curiosity or interest. Some panelists spoke about the unique culture of Morgan Stanley that sets it apart from its counterparts which was not only seen but felt throughout the week.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed the spring insight week as it allowed me to enrich my understanding of equity research which I had previously expressed taking a liking to, at the Step In, Step Up programme previously. From visiting the trading floor to producing our own bluepaper research reports, one of my highlights was witnessing a live studio recording session of the 鈥淭houghts on the Market鈥 podcast, with Andrew Sheets - especially in the wake of such a turbulent time for global markets!
Yes
I recommend having an up-to-date CV with a clear motivation set out in your cover letter. I also suggest being well read and up to date regarding current affairs to be able to display your commercial awareness, both as part of the interview process and when asking questions to demonstrate having "done your homework," so to speak.
