Overview
Each day was jam packed with various sessions delivered by different speakers, including managing directors ranging all the way to summer interns, sharing their insights. We also participated in case studies to get a feel for what it is like to work in different lines of business, alongside a tour of the building and trading floor. With each session, we had the opportunities to ask questions at the end to further deepen our understanding of each individual's experience of HSBC.
Skills
I was able to hone the soft skill of communication throughout the week as we participated in various presentation based activities that required articulate communication and sound teamwork that allowed us to deliver an effective presentation. I also honed the skill of ownership as I took it upon myself to ask questions when we wanted to know more, in order to gage the right understanding required to complete the DCM case study, for instance, which proved useful to ask for advice in.
Business Insight
I found the deep dive into various different lines of business to be very insightful as there were some areas of the bank that may not be otherwise heard of. Thus, shedding light on different divisions that exist was useful in opening up our eyes the the variety of different pathways one can take when breaking into a career in finance, beyond the roles that may first come to mind. Overall, it was an enjoyable and informative experience!
Culture
HSBC never fails to make me feel warm and welcomed, in each year I have participated on the programme, the staff and hosts have been nothing short of welcoming and approachable - truly manifesting the culture of diversity, equity and inclusion that they pride themselves on. The feeling of belonging was definitely communicated and felt throughout the week and there was never a moment where anyone was made to feel outcasted. The supportive culture fostered at the bank was very pleasant in my opinion.
Your Impressions
I absolutely loved each day of the insight programme. Not only was I able to learn a lot regarding different lines of business under CIB, but I was also able to fully immerse myself in the culture of the bank, by being there first hand. Rekindling with peers who joined the programme at an earlier stage, like myself was very wholesome - not to mention the whole emerging talent/recruitment team who made the process smooth and hassle free.
Yes
I would definitely show your motivation and genuine interest to apply through every opportunity you get, be it through the job simulation or video interview stages in order to demonstrate that you have a particular interest in exploring what this career has to offer. Also, it is good to read up on the news and generally be aware of current affairs so that you can draw upon them during discussions or mention them in video interview questions to display that you are sufficiently commercially aware.
